Are HP Laptop Chargers Universal?

hp laptop chargers aren't universal

Are HP laptop chargers universal? They are not. Some chargers have connectors that can only fit the ports of particular HP Models. Others don’t have the required rating to meet the power needs of every HP laptop you own.

Laptops are tricky. Their portability makes them highly convenient. But what do you do when your HP laptop charger dies? Can you replace it with the charger of any other HP laptop?

The technical answer is ‘No’. Practically speaking, people do this all the time. But the habit is frowned upon, and you will soon understand why. HP laptops are available in a variety of models and they do not always share the same power requirements.

Anyone that forces an HP laptop to use a charger from a different model exposes their machine to all sorts of dangers. This is true for every brand, not just HP. This issue isn’t simply applicable to people that are contemplating the notion of using an old laptop’s charger to power a new laptop. You are also expected to apply a lot of care whenever you purchase a universal charger.

Are Universal Chargers Safe?

When it comes to buying new chargers for your laptop, you can choose between OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) Chargers and Universal Chargers:

1). OEM Chargers

As the name suggests, these are the chargers that came with your laptops. OEM chargers are either made by the manufacturer of your computer or a third-party company that was contracted by your laptop manufacturer to produce them. Either way, whenever you buy an OEM HP Charger, it is not only guaranteed to work but you can trust it to perform optimally. OEM HP chargers have the HP logo. This sets them apart from cheap knockoffs.

2). Universal Laptop Chargers

If OEM chargers are so efficient, why doesn’t every laptop owner buy one?

According to The Power Supply Shop,

For all their advantages, OEM chargers are expensive. Additionally, OEM chargers for older HP models are difficult to find.

This is where universal chargers come into play. They are made by third party companies. As their name suggests, they are designed to fit multiple brands and models of laptops. This is why some of them are shipped with a variety of pins and tips.

You can change their connector pin to suit the power port of your HP laptop. Many people are forced to buy universal chargers because the OEM chargers for their particular HP laptop are unavailable.

As was mentioned before, this can happen in situations where the laptop in question is so old that no one makes original chargers for it. While universal chargers are convenient and cheap, their quality is questionable.

They cannot guarantee excellent performance. Some of them have ill-fitting components because you are expected to remove and replace them to match the needs of your laptop. This is especially true for the pin section.

The research you are expected to do before you can buy a suitable universal charger is even more off-putting. An OEM charger cannot fail to fit the power port or meet the electrical requirements of the HP model it was made for.

But it is quite easy to buy a universal charger that has the wrong pin size and voltage specifications. This is why you have to apply so much caution whenever you go shopping for a universal charger. Some HP models only accept OEM chargers. Keep that in mind.

People that have multiple HP laptops have been known to use their chargers interchangeably. It is certainly cheaper to use the same HP charger to power multiple HP laptops. But is this safe?

Are HP Laptop Chargers Interchangeable?

The Charging Angels Blog makes it clear that HP doesn’t have a universal charger that is compatible with all their models. But some HP chargers have connectors that can enter the power ports of multiple HP laptops.

In other words, you can plug the same charger into multiple HP laptops if the situation calls for it. However, you have to keep a few factors in mind:

1). Connector

The importance of the connector type cannot be emphasized enough. Laptop Battery One lists four different types of connectors, namely: cylindrical, USB, snap and lock, and Molex. You should never force a connector to enter a power port with a different shape and configuration.

Not only will you destroy the port (and the connector) but the charger is unlikely to work. You should only use the same charger to power multiple HP models if the connector fits them all. The connector is the section of the charger that enters the laptop. This doesn’t matter if you have a universal charger with multiple interchangeable connectors.

2). Smart Tip Technology

According to The laptop Power Supply Shop, modern chargers use smart tip technology which works to determine whether a charger has been connected and if it is the appropriate charger. Therefore, when you connect the wrong charger to a modern HP laptop, the laptop can tell.

In many instances, the laptop will simply inform you that you have connected the wrong charger. In a few instances, the technology will prevent your battery from charging. This is because it knows that the wrong charger can do irreversible damage to your computer. It will place limitations on the charging capabilities to protect the laptop.

3). Power

People tend to discourage laptop owners from using the same charger to power multiple machines because different HP laptops have different energy requirements. If you attach a charger with a lower rating to a powerful laptop that requires a lot more electricity than the charger can deliver, you may destroy the charger in the long run.

You also run the risk of lowering the lifespan of the battery. As was noted before, some laptops will use the insufficient charger to remain operational but they won’t charge the battery. If the rating of the charger falls far below the requirements of the laptop, the laptop won’t work.

If your machine is sophisticated enough, it will lower the performance of the laptop. This allows a weaker charger to power a stronger laptop without damaging it. Of course, this will prevent you from utilizing your laptop’s heaviest applications.

Conclusion

An HP charger with a lower rating may power the wrong HP laptop but the battery is less likely to charge. In some instances, the laptop won’t work because it can’t draw enough power through the charger to meet its needs.

You don’t have to worry about these problems if you have acquired an OEM charger for your laptop. But they can manifest with universal chargers.
